Mechanics and Physics of Porous solids

This series of lectures is dedicated to provide a large overview of the physics of porous solids. The aim is to point out the strong coupling between mechanics, chemistry and hydrodynamics in porous media. The course starts with the basics of thermodynamics and mechanics. Then the behavior of saturated porous media is described in terms of mechanics (Biot theory) and transport (Darcy's law). Unsaturated porous media are then described underlining the importance of capillarity (capillary pressure and relative permeabilities). The concepts are applied on confined phase change, mainly freezing and crystallization. Finally a brief overview of the experimental technics applied to porous media is given (XRD, µCT...)

Duration of the course: 30h
